Creating Filters and Labels for Google Groups
print icon
  1. Open your natomascharter.org Gmail Inbox.
  2. In the Search Mail field at the top of your inbox select the "Show Search Options" icon on the right side of the search bar.
  3. Select the "From" field and enter the name of the Google Group, Domain, or Individual you wish to create a filter for.
    1. Optionally use the Subject: or Has the words: fields if the group emails follow a pattern (e.g., “Daily Notice”, “Parent Group”).

    2. Leave other fields blank unless you need further narrowing.

  4. After entering criteria, click “Create filter”.

  5. In the next window choose what happens to matching messages:

    • Skip the Inbox (Archive it) — so your main inbox isn’t cluttered.

    • Apply the label: — create or select a label like “Group-Archive” or “Students-Group” by using the drop down option next to the Apply Label selection.

    • Optionally: Mark as read if you don’t need to open them.

    • Optionally check “Also apply filter to matching conversations” so existing messages get filtered too. This will retroactively move any emails or notifications that meet the filter criteria to its new label destination.

  6. Click Create filter to finish.

Created labels can be located on the left side of your Gmail screen.

TIP: Hover over a created label to show the 3 dot settings icon. This is where you can edit your individual label settings such as show/hide, label color, and create sub labels to "nest" similar filters.
